Introduction
Welcome to my journey through the Master of Education program; it has been a long but rewarding road. The process of putting this ePortfolio together was ... a very cathartic experience, as I can clearly recall some of the personal and professional challenges, milestones and successes that took place parallel with each of the artefacts. As a part-time student, balancing family, friends, leisure and work was not an easy task. Although I enjoyed my simple and regimented undergraduate experience, being able to draw upon and incorporate my personal and professional experiences in graduate studies was a unique and priceless endeavour.
When I decided to embark on my journey through the program, I had just completed my undergraduate degree and started working as a professional development educator in the e-learning field. At the time, e-learning was a new concept and a majority of the so-called e-learning courses I had encountered were technically "correspondence" courses where students were given course materials online, were expected to read and digest the materials on their own and submit research papers for grading. Like many others, I felt this method was flawed. In addition, because my undergraduate degree was not in Education, I felt somewhat under-qualified in a position where I am responsible to provide professional development curriculums to post-secondary faculty members.
As a result, I enrolled in the M. Ed. program with the following learning goals:
1) to become a more competent adult educator,
2) to engage in distance course development that enhances and improves the learners’ experience and
3) specifically, to determine the barriers post-secondary instructors face in incorporating technology into their daily teaching and learning activities.
This ePortfolio briefly summarizes my experience …
Layout/Navigation
As a formal web design instructor, I am an advocate for a clean, simple, easy to navigate and user-friendly website. As a result, I have chosen Wix.com instead of the provided platform by the program because I have already been using Wix.com to design websites and it is not only intuitive to learn but also intuitive for the users to navigate through.
I have listed the five artefacts as links at the top of every page of this site; you can also use the "next page" button at the bottom right of each page to page through the site. On the introduction page, you can view the courses I have completed and a list with direct links to the artefacts on the right. On each of the artefact pages, you can find a location at the bottom of the pages for you to provide public commentary. On the conclusion page, you can also contact me privately via email.
About Me
Like many Canadians, I am an immigrant. Born in Hong Kong to Taiwanese parents, I was blessed with the opportunity to live in both places during my childhood years and I am fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese. After completing Grade 11 and passing the Hong Kong Certificate of Education exam, I decided to move to Canmore, Alberta in order to become proficient in English.
After completing Grade 12 in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, I was accepted by the University of Victoria. While I was completing my undergraduate degree, I worked as a Helpdesk Analyst. After graduation, I transitioned into the position of WebCT Administrator, where I was responsible for administering the learning management system and providing faculty with training and support on a variety of educational technologies. This experience gave me a unique combination of expertise in both systems administration and classroom teaching. I have also worked at Camosun College, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Alberta in various technology-related educational roles. Currently, I am working for Grant MacEwan University as an educational technology facilitator.
In my leisure time, I enjoy downhill and cross-country skate skiing, camping, and hiking. Two summers ago, I started rowing after a 20-year absence and had great fun; as a result, I have be rowing competitively with the Leduc Boat Club. Please stop by and wave if you see me rowing on the Telford Lake!
